Apple's next Pro iPhone models could receive one of the most significant camera hardware upgrades in years.
According to recent supply-chain reports, the iPhone 18 Pro series is expected to feature a new variable-aperture main camera.

This upgrade brings hardware flexibility traditionally found on dedicated cameras and some Android flagships.
The moving lens system reportedly carries an average selling price roughly 50% higher than the premium 7P lens currently used in Apple's Pro iPhones.
Despite the higher hardware costs, there are currently no strong indications that Apple plans to significantly raise prices for the iPhone 18 Pro lineup.
Launch pricing is still months away, so that could change, but reports suggest Apple may absorb at least some of the additional cost.

Camera System Details
The camera system is expected to retain a triple 48MP setup, with the biggest change centered on the primary camera.
A variable aperture would allow the lens to physically adjust how much light enters the sensor, potentially improving low-light photography and offering better control over depth of field in brighter conditions.
If implemented well, it could give photographers more flexibility without requiring extra effort.
Most users may never notice the hardware working, but the resulting images could benefit from it.
Beyond the camera, the phones are also expected to debut with Apple's next-generation A20 Pro chip and a refreshed Camera app in iOS 27.

Some reports have hinted at new color options, including a darker cherry-inspired finish.
For now, the variable-aperture camera is shaping up to be the headline feature.
Apple has generally preferred software and computational photography improvements over dramatic hardware changes, making this rumor stand out.
As with all supply-chain leaks, it's wise to keep expectations in check until Apple makes an official announcement.
