Xiaomi is set to launch its first network-attached storage (NAS) device, the Xiaomi Smart Storage, through a crowdfunding campaign running from July 1 to July 8.
The device targets families and small offices seeking an affordable, easy-to-use alternative to cloud storage.
The Smart Storage features a minimalist cube design with a grey finish.
It is a dual-bay model compatible with both 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch SATA drives, allowing users to mix and match storage configurations.
According to a leaked engineering sample, the device is powered by a Realtek RTD1619B quad-core ARM Cortex-A55 processor clocked at up to 1.7 GHz, the same chip used in entry-level Synology models.
The sample includes 2GB of DDR3L RAM and 8GB of storage for the operating system, with support for up to 40TB total storage.
The prototype featured a Gigabit Ethernet port, but the final version is expected to include at least one 2.5GbE port, along with USB 3.0 and HDMI connectivity.
Pricing and Bundles
Xiaomi will offer three pre-configured bundles during the crowdfunding period:
- Beginner (4TB) — CNY 2,299 (~$338)
- Advanced (8TB) — CNY 2,899 (~$426)
- Professional (16TB) — CNY 4,699 (~$690)
These prices are considered competitive compared to typical retail NAS devices.
The Smart Storage is expected to integrate with Xiaomi's smart home ecosystem and support Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, and Linux platforms.
The launch comes amid growing consumer concerns over rising cloud storage costs and privacy issues.
While software details such as Docker support remain unclear, a user-friendly experience could help bring NAS technology to a broader audience.
